Exchange Wine Club SubscriptionMourvedre, is a variety of red wine grape from the Mediterranean basin, now grown around the world. It is common in Southern France and in Spain, where it is known as Monastrell. In Portugal and some parts of the New World it is known as Mataró. It produces tannic wines that can be high in alcohol, and is most successful in Rhone-style blends. It has a particular affinity for Grenache, giving it depth and structure. Its taste varies greatly according to area, but often has a wild, gamey or earthy flavour, with soft red fruit flavours. One of its most successful incarnations is in Bandol, on the Mediterranean coast, in France, where it is the main grape in the appellation's red blends.
