First Drop Pintor Tempranillo 2010, Barossa, South Australia
Tempranillo
South Australia, Australia
$37.00 (303321)
There is good cause to be optimistic about tempranillo in Australia - the hot arid climate is similar to the plateaus of north-central Spain where this grape thrives. There is still an obvious sweetness, menthol and warmth that speaks more of Barossa than tempranillo, but compared to Barossa shiraz this a light, fresh, juicy and spicy red. I like the sour cherry fruit, with clove, eucalyptus and tea-like complexities. There is also some elegance. Very nicely done, with some overstated chocolate and oak on the finish. Excellent length.Score: 90 (David Lawrason, WineAlign.com, Mar 2013)Critic Reviews (1)
