Katogi & Strofilia Averoff Xinomavro 2007, Pdo Naoussa

Naoussa, Greece

A clean, mature, ripe and savoury example of xinomavro from Katogi-Strofilia, as is the house style, with earthy, sun-dried tomato, black olive tapenade and leathery fruit - all very inviting and engaging. The palate is mid-weight, firmly structured but not austere, with dusty tannins and crunchy acids, but quite fine length and depth overall. For fans of Italian-style, dusty reds, excellent with grilled proteins. Score: 88 (John Szabo, MS, WineAlign.com, Mar 2013)Critic Reviews (2)

Really dig this wine, especially at the price. Very reminiscent of the 2005, with it's mature, earthy notes of black olive, black cherry, and dried savoury herbs. On the palate, it's medium-bodied with quite high acid and gripping tannins (the comparison to nebbiolo definitely makes sense) with excellent length. This is definitely not for everyone as it's a little savoury and rough around the edges, but it's a seriously well made wine and shows off beautifully with food. Tasted May 2012.

Lots of leathery berry flavors with hints of spice and cedar. Tannins are firm and strong but could use some additional age. The weight and clean acidity makes this wine food friendly.
