Le Serre Nuove Dell’ornellaia 2017, Bolgheri

This is the second wine of Ornellaia. In this vintage it is a nicely ripe, quite fruity and softer almost Californian...

The 20th vintage of Le Serre Nuove is a blend of 54% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot and has a reserved nose of ripe blackberry, cherry, oak spice, currant, cassis, and some earthy-savoury aromas. It is medium-full bodied with the aroma profile echoing on the palate led by currant and cassis flavours surrounding a savoury core. Tannins are supple and grippy, while acids are well-balanced. Excellent finish length. Better in 4-5 years and drink until 2030. Very impressive from a hot, dry, and challenging vintage. Tasted Oct/2019.

This seems to have less nuance and precison than previous vintages. It has some good jammy fruit, but is off-balance (oak/jam/acidity) and does not show purity or vibrancy. You would think the winemaking style would sway more toward purity at this point.
