About Yalumba
Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch “Yalumba” – aboriginal for “all the land around”.
Five generations and 160 years later Yalumba, Australia’s oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, embodying all that has made the Australian wine success story the envy of winemakers the world over.
With uncompromising focus on quality and innovation, Yalumba has consistently produced highly awarded wines. The winery is rated five red stars by James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion 2014). Visit: www.yalumba.com
About Jane Ferrari
The job title of ‘Winemaker – Communications’ scarcely indicates the scope of Jane Ferrari’s role at Yalumba Wines and still less of her expansive personality. Her passion is as infectious as it is heartfelt. If you spend an hour or so with Jane, be it in a London boardroom, a New York tasting or at the Angaston winery, you will learn more about the heritage and culture of Yalumba and the wider Barossa region than most locals learn in a lifetime.
Jane received a winemaking degree at Roseworthy Agricultural College, where she undertook her required vintage experience with the legendary red wine magician John Glaetzer at the then fledgling Wolf Blass Wines in 1983. Once fully graduated, Jane worked for Tollana Wines, United Distillers, Yalumba, then Rockford Wines. By 1996 Jane was back at Yalumba to stay, accumulating an extraordinary array of tales from experiences on the road, talking of the wine, food and people of the Barossa in a storytelling style that is her established trademark. There is never a dull moment and it is always a good story to be heard when Jane is around, which is perhaps why she was awarded the title of ‘Australian Wine Communicator of the Year’ in 2012 and Baron of Barossa in 2013.
When Jane is asked what she does for a living, she simply replies “storyteller….and it’s a top job.”
